Spot Kick Denies Castle Vase Glory
Sunday 22nd April 2012
|Phoenix Castle||0 v 1||Punchbowl Saints|
Aaron Webb 72 (Pen)
A seventy second minute penalty from Punchbowl Saints' Aaron Webb proved decisive as cup specialists Phoenix Castle slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat in the final of the Birmingham County FA Sunday Vase.
The Birmingham Coronation Football League outfit appeared to settle quickly against their Beacon League counterparts and were quick to test Richard Kingston in the Castle goal from an early free kick. The lively James Cooper then tried to break through the Punchbowl defence, but his shot was dealt with easily by Ian Kimberley.
Kingston was forced into action five minutes later, making a superb double save whilst further efforts from Cooper, Ste Hadley and Mark Edwards failed to find the back of the 'Saints' net. Neat play between 'Saints' Lee Sayer and Adam Allden carved out the opportunity for Sean Bell, but his shot after 38 minutes went wide of the upright.
Mitchell Plows replaced injured skipper Andy Cooper for the second half with Castle enjoying a good 20 minute spell of pressure. Daniel Forrest, Edwards and Plows all went close before disaster struck as referee Raymond Everitt pointed to the spot after a foul in the penalty box - Webb making no mistake from the resulting spot kick to give Punchbowl the lead.
Phoenix Castle fought back, the twice BCFA Sunday Junior Cup winners conjured up efforts from Dean Lacey, Joe Pedley and the ever dangerous James Cooper but they could find no way through a resolute Punchbowl defence and with the clock ticking down, time eventually ran out despite their valiant efforts.
Ross McGarry (pictured) picked up the Man of the Match award for his sterling defensive display during the match.
