Walsall's Double Delight!
Thursday 9th May 2013
|Sportsman||1 v 4||Walsall Wood|
Chris Brown 39
Andre Gonzales 16, 47
Lawsons Premiership Champions Walsall Wood secured the 'Double' after a 4-1 win over Sportsman in the First 4 Staff Premier Cup at the Castlecroft Stadium.
Andre Gonzales opened the scoring after 16 minutes, fine work by Ryan Thomas resulted in the ball being squared to Gonzales who rifled in with his left foot past Kieran Tambs in the Sportsman goal.
Sportsman always looked dangerous on the attack and Richard Wright headed over following a cross from Chris Brown. The equalising goal did arrive, six minutes from half time. Jason Batchelor playing through a fine weighted ball to Brown and when the defender missed his clearance, Brown spun the ball round him before placing the ball past Ryan Cheshire. There was just enough time for Batchelor, played in by Lee Wright to test Cheshire again but the keeper palmed the ball round the post for a corner.
Frontman Mario Menzez replaced Tom Lowe at the start of the second half as Sportsman went all out to get the second goal, but within two minutes of the restart Walsall were back in front, Gonzales jinking into the box and neatly dispatching his and his team's second goal. Brown and Batchelor forced Cheshire into making two fines saves, whilst Damian Robinson had a great chance at the other end, Correy Carrithers' right wing cross, but Robinson seeing his header wide of the upright.
The league champions effectively ended brave Sportsman's efforts on 77 minutes. Corey Carrithers rifling in the third from 18 yards out. Nathan Babb tried a long range effort which flew wide of the target before Joshua Cann sealed the 'double' with the easiest of finishes at the death.
Captain Jamie Aiton received the trophy from First 4 Staff Managing Director Jason Guy and league president and former Wolverhampton Wanderers player Mel Eves.
